The Phone Call
408 words
Haruka was babysitting her neighbor's kids. It was late evening. Both kids were asleep upstairs and Haruka was watching TV in the living room. The house phone rang. Haruka didn't answer it. It was the family's phone so Haruka let it go to the answering machine.
After a few rings, the machine picked up. Haruka heard some strange breathing. Then a hoarse voice whispered, "You should check on the children." and hung up.
Haruka shivered. She got up and locked the front door.
The phone rang again. Again, she let the machine answer. "Hello. I know you're there. Check on the children," the voice said.
Haruka didn't know what to do. Was this a joke? Her neighbor doing a weird check-in? What should she do?
Then the phone rang again. This time she picked it up.
"Check on the ...." the whispering voice said, before Haruka interrupted.
"Who is this? Is this a joke or something?" she said.
"You should listen to me," the voice said, "Go upstairs!"
Haruka said, "The only thing I'm doing is hanging up and calling the police." She slammed down the phone and dialed 9-1-1.
"What's your emergency?" the operator asked.
"Some guy keeps making creepy calls and telling me to go upstairs." Haruka said, "I'm babysitting and I'm alone. I think it's just a joke, but it's scaring me."
"OK" said the operator, "I'll send a car over right now. And we'll check the phone lines. The guy is probably calling from his cellphone so we can find out who it is pretty quickly! An officer will be over in 5 minutes."
Haruka thanked the operator and hung up. She sighed in relief and waited for the police. She was surprised to hear sirens and a car speeding down the road after only a minute. The sirens got very loud and she heard the screech of brakes. She went to the window and saw two police officers run out of the car with their guns in hand. They banged on the door.
Haruka opened it, surprised. Before she could speak, one police officer shouted, "Get out of the house now. We traced the call."
"Well, what's the rush then? Who was the caller?" Haruka asked.
"We don't know who. But we do know where they were calling from," the officer answered as he shoved her out of the doorway and moved in front of her.
"Where?" she asked.
"From the upstairs bedroom!"
